Chapter Six

The entire time he slept, Adam dreamed of his childhood. He dreamed of Sunday afternoons spent at the beach with his mom and dad, enjoying a barefoot walk along the water’s edge, the cool sand squished between his toes as he talked endlessly, as young children do.

Memories of Pascual teaching him how to swim in the lateafternoon surf played across his mind. It was so realistic it was like he was there, a boy of no more than six, the sun warming the skin across his shoulders. He remembered how Susan painstakingly picked out the perfect spot, laying out a blanket to arrange potato salad, fried chicken, and deviled eggs from plastic containers to protect the food from the fine grains of sand that seemed to get into everything.

By the end of the day, they were full, sunburned, and exhausted, their sunscreen washed away by the salty gulf waters.

Sensing that it was time to awaken, Adam stirred, and the vision of his family at the beach faded like the sunset, but then Jose flashed into his mind, his face etched in a look of concern. Was he in trouble?

Adam’s eyes shot wide open, and he took in a short burst of air. Standing at the end of the bed was Emerico, dressed in black from head to toe. Around his waist hung a holster full of ancient-looking weaponry that glistened from the light of the full moon already high in the night sky. Unfortunately, Romero was standing only inches behind him, also dressed in black but in leather instead. The tight outfit showed every bulging muscle and every swelling curve on his flawless body. How long is he going to stay? Adam thought, raising onto his elbows and blinking away sleep. He cleared his throat. “What’s going on?”

Emerico spoke first, stepping forward. “While we were sleeping, there was an explosion at city hall. Six bombs. Numerous are hurt. At least fifteen reported dead.”

“What? Who?” Adam shook his head willing himself to wake, his head still foggy from last night’s activities, the feeling reminiscent of a hangover. “Has anyone taken responsibility for the attack yet?”

“We already know who did this,” answered Romero. “The Romani.”

“But weren’t they sleeping, too?” Adam asked, stating the obvious, or so he thought.

“I said bombs. Bombs on timed detonators.”

Now it had made sense. “Sorry, I get it now. I’m awake.” Adam scrambled to stand. “What’s the plan?”

Emerico and Romero gazed toward the region of Adam’s midsection, or just about. He looked down following their gaze. Adam had forgotten. When he came in last night, he was too exhausted to slip into his favorite Abercrombie boxers he liked to sleep in, choosing to throw himself into bed naked instead. At the time, he didn’t care. But now…

He reached down to do his best to attempt to cover his fully erect cock arching northward. Shit. Snatching a pillow from off the bed, he covered his erection. “My bad,” he said sidestepping toward the bathroom.

Emerico grinned and his left brow quirked in appreciation.
